PROGRAM - École des Hautes Études en
Sciences Sociales, Paris (France)
Overview of Master APE
The Master APE (« Analyse et Politique Economiques » - « Economic Policies Analysis ») offers a a high-level, research-oriented training in theoretical and applied economics. The APE programme is well established as one of the leading graduate programmes in economics in Europe, and many of its former students hold positions in top European and U.S. universities, as well as in international organizations, public administrations and central banks. The APE programme is jointly organized by a number of top French academic institutions: Paris School of Economics, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS), Ecole de la Statistique et de l'Administration Economique (ENSAE), Ecole Polytechnique, Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées and HEC.
The Master APE is a two-year programme corresponding to the two-year coursework of U.S. Ph.D. programmes. The first year M1 is dedicated to basic and methodological courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and economic history. During the second year M2, APE students choose advanced courses from a wide range of areas covering all major fields of specialisation (economic theory, industrial organization, macroeconomics, public and labor economics, development economics, finance) and write a Master thesis. The diploma of the Master is delivered at the end of this year.
See the detailed program of the Master and the detailed courses proposed in years M1 and M2. Courses are taught in English.
The Master APE is mainly hosted at Campus PARIS-Jourdan and is associated with research units of Paris School of Economics (including LEA and Paris-Jourdan Sciences Economiques (PSE), which puts together all faculty members previously associated with the research units DELTA, CERAS and CEPREMAP), as well as the research units located in three other campuses associated to the programme: Laboratoire d'Econométrie de l'X, CREST and HEC research center.
Each student has an advisor during the first year (who needs not be the research supervisor of the second year).
European Doctoral Program
Since 1987, the APE doctoral program belongs in the European Doctoral Program (EDP) in economics, which gathers EHESS, the London School of Economics, the University Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), the Florence European Institute, and the Universities of Bonn, Louvain and Tel-Aviv. PhD students of the APE can participate in the EDP program and spend a year in one of these institutions (usually the first year of their PhD). Applications to the EDP program have to be made during the second year (M2) of the Master APE. The selection is based on the grades obtained in the first and second year and the research project.
