STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM

The research training in the EDP comprises a preliminary course level, an advanced course level and a dissertation stage, undertaken at the participating institutions. (Students wishing to study exclusively at any one of the institutions may, of course, do so by applying directly to that institution outside the scope of the EDP.)

Preliminary Level Course Work

All teaching is in English (for details, see the separate institutions' web pages below).
This work may be undertaken at any one of the first five institutions listed above. This preliminary level course work lasts for one year. It aims at ensuring that the student has covered the common core of essential knowledge in quantitative economics. The course structure and content differ between the five universities.

Stay Abroad/Advanced Level Course Work

Each institution offers either specialised teaching in those areas of research that are of current interest to its faculty or a structured course of studies, e.g. M.Phil. at London and Ecole doctorale at Louvain. All of the advanced level teaching is in English.
A stay abroad at one of the partner universities is required. This stay abroad should extend over a minimum of 3 months. This does not affect the ability of specific institutions to require a long stay for logistical and academic reasons.

Joint Activities

All participants in the EDP get together each year for a three-day jamboree, devoted to seminars on special topics and student presentations. These meetings, drawing on the common faculty resources, also provide students with information about current research activities, help orient their own work, and offer guidance on research subjects and associated supervisors. All EDP students from the advanced year of course work onwards are expected to attend these jamborees. Moreover, it is mandatory to attend at least 2 jamborees and to present a paper at least once.

Dissertation

The dissertation may be written at one of the institutions where course work was done. It is normally written in English and submitted to the chosen institution according to local regulations. The main results of the dissertation should be of sufficient quality to be publishable in recognised journals. When the year abroad is taken at the dissertation stage, a faculty member of the host institution is designated to be local adviser of the EDP student and to meet him or her regularly. Where the regulations of the sending institution permit, this local adviser is a member of the student's doctoral committee.

Degree

Doctoral degrees are awarded by the institution where the dissertation is submitted. In addition, the program committee provides a certificate stating that the degree is awarded under the European Doctoral Program in Quantitative Economics.

Initial Qualifications

Students whose initial qualifications are deemed insufficient for direct entry into the preliminary year of the EDP may be required to undertake appropriate course work during a qualifying year. Each institution has his own requirements.

Financing

Some of the EDP institutions are able to provide fellowships.
